How to Teach a Kid to Brush & Floss on Their Own
Peter C.

As a parent, you are in charge of your child's health and well-being. You'll start providing for a child's needs at a young age by feeding, bathing, and, of course, brushing their teeth and gums. Teaching a child consistent brushing and flossing practice can be challenging in the future. However, if you concentrate on a few easy actions, you may help prepare your child for a lifetime of excellent oral health.

How to Teach a Kid to Brush & Floss on Their Own

You must maintain a regular dental routine since as a parent, you are your child's primary motivation. Allow your child to observe you while you regularly brush and floss your teeth. Bring your child into the bathroom with you as you brush your teeth, even if they are still infants. After that, you can assist them in cleansing their gums with a towel or finger brush. You can start brushing and flossing between your child's teeth when they are older.

How to Teach a Child to Brush Their Teeth

So now that your child has new teeth of their own, it’s important to begin brushing them daily with a soft bristled child’s toothbrush. Here are some strategies you can use to make brushing fun.

It’s more fun to brush your teeth with a cool new toothbrush. If you allow your child to pick their own brush with a fun cartoon character or colorful design they may want to brush their teeth more often.

Practice on a Stuffed Animal

Sometimes children need to be shown many different examples of proper teeth brushing. So show them how to brush using a stuffed animal or a puppet that has an open mouth. You can also try cartoons or apps that teach children about brushing teeth.

Sometimes all a child needs is a little more information. If your child is reluctant to brush their teeth, it may be because they don’t understand why they need to do it. Explaining to your child in simple terms the reasons why we take care of our teeth can help a child in the learning process.

It’s really important for your child to brush all of their teeth effectively. Sometimes children focus on the front teeth, and sometimes they focus just on the molars. By teaching them to time their brushing, perhaps using a two minute song, they can be reminded to move their toothbrush throughout their mouths.

How to Teach a Child to Floss

Flossing teeth properly is a skill that many adults have yet to master. Flossing is only required once a day, but it is critical to the health and well-being of your teeth and gums. Here are some ways to introduce flossing to your child.

Again, small children sometimes need help understanding why it’s important to do certain things and that new experiences can he a good thing. Also, some kids need more information about new experiences than others. Make sure your child understands that flossing doesn’t hurt and is actually good for their teeth.

It is easy to find fun plastic flossing aids at your local drug store. These devices not only make flossing fun, but they are specially designed for smaller mouths. This makes flossing much easier for your child.

You may have already discovered that flossing is an excellent opportunity to check your teeth. You can demonstrate to your youngster how to count their teeth while flossing by having them peek inside their mouths. They'll not only remember to floss in between every tooth, but they'll also gain additional knowledge about how to evaluate their oral health.

Keep in mind that kids look up to their parents. Make flossing a special time for your child and you to connect. You might start by demonstrating the proper way to brush and floss them. Once they've gotten the hang of it, you may move from this to a discussion of your day. If you do this, flossing won't be seen as a duty and you'll have more time to spend with your child.

Consult with a pediatric dentist if you're still having trouble getting your kid to practice daily brushing and flossing. They can advise you and your child on how to brush and floss their teeth properly. Even before they develop teeth, you can begin taking your child to the dentist. Children who are taught the value of dental cleanliness at a young age tend to experience less fear and anxiety while visiting the dentist and have better dental health in the long run.
