Is Sedation Dentistry for Children Safe?
Blake T.

Dentistry can be intimidating for parents and their children.  Children can develop cavities as soon as teeth erupt, which can make treatment difficult due to the cooperation of a young child.  At our office, we are happy to off different behavior management techniques.  We discuss the risks and potential benefits of each behavior management technique prior to treatment.  One of the techniques we use is sedation dentistry for children. It is our goal to offer dentistry in a compassionate and caring way while minimizing the risk for each individual child.

What is Sedation Dentistry?

Sedation is one treatment option that is offered at our office.  Sedation for children varies on the type of drug or medicine that is used.  The most basic form of sedation is minimal sedation or nitrous oxide/oxygen therapy (laughing gas).  Our office also offers conscious sedation (moderate sedation) for children who may need more assistance getting through a procedure.  Dr. Jarod also has privileges at Trinity UnityPoint Muscatine to provide care while anesthetists administer general anesthesia (sleep dentistry). Dr. Jarod Johnson will discuss the risks and benefits to sedation prior to any procedure.

3 Types of Dental Sedation for Children

1. Laughing Gas (Nitrous Oxide/Oxygen Supplementation)

Laughing gas provides ankylosis and analgesia.  It is administered through a nasal hood and can help children relax to get through a dental procedure.  Some children report a sense of floating, euphoria, and tingling in their arms and legs.  Laughing gas has minimal risk and is suitable for most patients; however, it may not be enough to relax children to undergo dental care.

2. Conscious Sedation (Moderate Sedation)

Our office offers oral sedation to children who meet the safety qualifications.  Many children may benefit from moderate sedation. Moderate sedation is used when basic behavior management techniques have been unsuccessful, fearful or anxious patients, to protect the developing psyche, and to reduce medical risk.  Not all patients are candidates for moderate sedation.  Dr. Jarod will provide an evaluation and discuss moderate sedation if necessary.

3. General Anesthesia

General anesthesia uses various medications to induce a sleep-like state.  Dr. Jarod holds privileges at Trinity Muscatine to provide care in the operating room.  Anesthetists administer general anesthesia to facilitate care of children.  During the procedure, all dental care is completed at one time.  General anesthesia is necessary to facilitate care for some children.  We are happy to discuss the risks and benefits with you to help you make an informed decision for your child.
