When is tongue tie a problem?
Steven S.

New mothers often ask us the question; When is tongue tie a problem? Breastfeeding is one of the healthiest choices a mother can make for her infant. Breast milk is superior to any other nutrient for infants, and provides many benefits to the mother and child. Mothers who experience difficulty with breastfeeding their newborn could have infants with a tongue tie problem. Sometimes mothers and babies do not have issues feeding, and tongue ties aren’t noticed until a child is much older and has difficulties with speech, eating, or is at a higher risk for cavities.

Tongue Tie Symptoms

We advise new mothers to consult a pediatrician and a lactation expert to ascertain whether there are any functional issues. To evaluate whether there is a functional issue, pediatric dentists can also evaluate oral tissues. Nursing problems are one issue that could indicate a tie. Babies may have to work harder to finish eating, which may cause pain for mothers while they are breastfeeding. Infants may also struggle to acquire weight because of insufficient milk intake and more effort required to eat properly. In addition, mothers may hear a clicking or popping sound, and babies may ingest air as a result of a weak latch, which can cause more than usual spitting up, gas, or reflux.

What is the treatment for oral ties?

A tongue or lip knot can be freed in several different ways. In the past, midwives would use a sharp fingernail to release the tongue or lip. Fortunately, as technology has advanced, more surgeons and pediatric dentists can treat patients safely and efficiently. Lasers, electrosurgery, and knives have all been used to cut loose ties. Baby lip ties can now be fixed with lasers in an outpatient environment without the dangers of sedation or general anesthesia.

As mentioned earlier, it is best to use a team approach when dealing with tongue ties in infants. After correction newborns will need to learn to retrain their muscles in order see improvement in nursing. Like wise older children who have had difficulties with speech should have access to speech therapy.
