Why Ignoring a Toothache is a Bad Idea
Charles K.

What may seem like innocent dental pain can actually be a potential sign of a growing cavity or deep infection in your teeth. If not treated, this tooth decay can spread to the center of the tooth, infecting the pulp and inflaming the nerves. Worst case scenario, tooth pain can even signal the presence of an abscess, which is a condition that spreads and threatens other teeth and soft tissue in your mouth.

If you think that a toothache will go away on its own, then you are greatly mistaken. Tooth pain usually does not resolve on its own. In almost all cases, it only gets worse. If you visit the dentist early, a simple filling might solve the problem. However, if the dental visit is delayed and the pulp becomes affected or the existence of an abscess is confirmed, more complex procedures may be needed to cure the pain permanently.

If the dental pain you are experiencing is because of a small to the medium cavity, a filling is used to restore the tooth structure after cleaning it out. Anesthesia is given to most patients before the tooth is cleaned and prepared, and then a composite resin material is used to fill the tooth’s cavity. Moreover, if it is considered necessary, the biting surface may be reshaped to take the shape of a natural tooth.

However, if an infection is causing the pain and the decay has already spread to the pulp, the tooth needs to be treated using a root canal therapy and antibiotics. In such conditions, the pulp channels are completely cleaned and filled with a biocompatible material that restores the strength of the tooth.

On the other hand, if abscess is identified, it is considered as a dental emergency and needs immediate medical attention. Treating this dental condition requires the use of antibiotics and can also include the removal of the affected tissue. If an abscess is left untreated, it can spread further leading to gum disease and eventually tooth loss.
